Destroy Addis Ababa – Adios Ethiopia | By Kebour Ghenna

Kebour Ghenna

Very soon, I will be celebrating my sixtieth birthday in Addis Ababa. My son was born in Addis Ababa. I was born in Addis Ababa. My father was born Addis Ababa. My grandfather also!

Last week’s EPRDF arbitrary edict, offering Addis Ababa an absurd affirmative action model has come as a surprise and shock to me… I am sure to many others too. This decree reinforces further the attempt of the government to divide of Addis Ababians according to ethnic lines, and disenfranchises a huge number of residents.

It’s a foolish edict of injustice that is discriminatory and contrary to the fundamental principles of the Constitution.

Yes, EPRDF may have done this to address the grievance of Oromia, but why do it in a way that undermines and weakens the nation. Why chose to create new problems faster than solving old ones? No doubt the legitimate concerns of Oromia should be addressed thru open dialogue and negotiation between all the antagonists, and not through some arbitrary edicts prescribed from, we don’t know where.

Only a democratic political system could create effective governance in Ethiopia and earn Oromos and other ethnic groups trust in the state. In today’s Ethiopia, for political reform to succeed, declaring the ‘right’ policies is not enough, creating an enabling environment that lead to the debate and implementation of that policy is no less important.

The monumental blunder of this edict will likely lead this peaceful city to unprecedented ethnic discord, division and conflict. At best, it will open the door for a whopping corruption. At worst it will start us down a costly, intellectually draining, dead-end path into a world of overwhelming unknowns. More important, it will waste time and influence that otherwise could be devoted to repairing the politics of the nation to which we are inevitably tied.

It’s plain sad to see politicians care only for themselves, as opposed to everyone’s interest. Yet even EPRDF can’t ignore reality forever! How can it proclaim such absurdities: ‘Oromo residents of the city shall be entitled to the right to self-determination’ or ‘Oromo residents shall be entitled to 25% of the city council, besides to their representation as residents of the city’ or ‘Afaan Oromo shall become “the working and official language” of Addis Ababa [Now, why not of Ethiopia?!!] along with Amharic’ … and many more similar incredible array of stipulations.

Why this trail of blunders?

Is this the best EPRDF can come up with on the status of Addis Ababa?

Where are we heading with this?

Actually, I’m not sure if it’s incompetence… or sheer complacency. But frankly, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that EPRDF opted to damage the state to gain popular support and thus further strengthen its political power by dividing people along ethnic lines. What is new is that even the ordinary person is beginning to see the scam.

My point today is not to moralize, but to point out the practical implications of this decree on Addis Ababa. This policy will destroy the social cohesion that made the trade mark of the city; a city with no distinct ethnic enclave. It will wreck the existing community bonds and shared sentiments that are visible all across the city. More importantly, it will obstruct the assimilation of ethnics, and inhibit the creation of a closer bond between the people and the federal government.

Indeed, it’s necessary for the Federal government to negotiate with Oromia the status of Addis Ababa and its relations with neighboring woredas, but make no mistake the final outcome should be an independent and democratic city, with clear boundaries and with no favoritism to any ethnic group. A capital city for all! Period.

If we want an Addis Ababa that is democratic and prosperous, if we want Double A to become the beacon of Africa, for the sake of the nation, and the preservation of its polity it’s high time to ensure the state government is for every citizen alike, otherwise the problems will ruin not just Addis Ababa, but also the entire nation.

  1. New demographic changes that took place during the last 50-60 years have been many making any attempt to reset them potentially disastrous. Those plains, hills and grasslands where I spent my early childhood are not the same. There has been a lot of population shifting that the language has been replaced by a new one. The clan members on my mother side have left the area where they lived for centuries. There are new residents in their now. The new residents are calling it their traditional and ancestral place. They swear to you that there were there since this or that dynasty in 12th, 11th, 10th, 9th all the way to the Neanderthals age. That means I was not there when I was a child. For them I don’t even know where I was born. My parents were just making it up. The broad day lie they dispense every day makes you cringe. These groups are not only pathological liars but they kill for it. One of the story they told as a ‘documented’ fact is the burial place of a certain notable. Many historians at the time had clearly mentioned where that notable died and buried in a hurry. But this liars have now designated a burial place they call a mausoleum close to 500 miles away from the actual locality. I did not sit idle about this outright lie. I brought up the story to one individual from the region and told him it was a misrepresentation of facts. Boy, was he irate!!! I said if I go to the place to visit the new acclaimed site it would be like going to one of those Chinese replicas of the Roman ruins, say, in Zhongshan instead of the actual ones in Rome. He asserted to me that it is what the elderly in his community want him to believe and there is nothing I or anyone else can do about it. That was where I stopped from pushing the issue any further because beside this unfortunate falsification of history he has been one of my reliable friends. That just makes him very unstable and volatile. True and factual history is a distortion and any easily palatable falsified story a newly discovered ‘history’. Peter Pan can fly!!! Let’s fly!!! Lets fly!!!!

  3. Well dear brother, I understand your concern and I believed you are not the only one. However, what alternative do we have to answer the demand of the Oromo people when we all know that’s their land and yet the Addis Ababa founder’s children never give credit for EPRDF for keeping the statue of the founder safe while majority Ethiopians believed it should be dismissed with the old system.

To be honest, I am not Oromo but it is fair even to make Afan Oromo Federal language if the people of Oromo agrees to use the Ethiopian alphabet which makes Ethiopia proud.

Our politicians should work together to accommodate Ethiopian alphabet with afan oromo then make Afan Oromo Federal language. Vi va.Oromo you deserve it. but be fair for all.

  4. TPLF did the same thing what it did throughout its history to ethiopia and addisababian. It did and is doing the same politic on ethiopia and ethiopian people as long as it benefit tplfistes. I don’t undersatand why people wonder about the politic of this bastard tplf. All ethiopian people should know that tplf is in the finishing of building the great nation Tigray in east africa. Offcource this is happening at the cost of the old ethiopia and especially at the cost of amharan people and amharan region.

  6. You are telling us that your families have been uprooting the Oromo from Finfinne and have been wagging cultural and social genocide on the Oromo nation. Still you wish that your children and the children of your children shall keep on these practices. But it doesn’t work.

It is better if you think rationally and adjust yourself with the realities  of this time instead of dreaming the golden time of your forefathers. Let me give you the following pieces of advise: First, you have to denounce all the bad deeds of all past and present repressive systems. Second, make sure for yourself that the hegemony of the Habesha will not have place in Oromia and in the southern part of that country henceforth.

Calling the ghost of Minilik or crying for fake unity in order to sustain your previous privileges will not help you any more.  We are in the 21st century. The real solution is only working for mutual understanding and respect. The dark time of the Minilik’s era will not come back again. The rotten and inhuman systems of the invaders of old neftengas will never reincarnate. The ghost of Minilik also will not defend the failed ambitions of his offspring. The Woyane hegemony will be replaced soon with a democratic system which will care for all citizens.

The main problem is your mentality and the culture in which you grew up. The mentality and the culture of the dark era of Minilik, Haile Selassie and Derg which are still influencing and confusing you. You need redemption. But it is better if you reconcile yourself with the reality of this time. You cannot turn back the wheel of history. The empty akakii zeref will not help you. The ghost of Minilik also cannot help you. It is better if you accept the realities of your time and work on the democratic principles so that you will embrace with dignity and respect the future multinational democratic Ethiopia without suffering under inferiority complex. Don’t forget also you and your ancestors having been suffering a lot as Gojames and Gonderes under those inhuma systems of that empire state. From those systems you have inherited only pseudo prides, bad mentality and cultures under which you are still in custody. I wish that you will become free from that mentality as a good cultured human being.

Finfinne is the main part of Oromia. Nobody can change it. The debteric essay which you consider as a history can’t change this reality. Therefore, whether you like it or not Finfinne will be ruled under the Oromia regional state. All the residents of Finfinne will have equal rights with the Oromo. Oromo individuals will not have special privileges. All the residents of Finfinne will have equal rights like all the residents of Asela, Adama, Jimma and Goba.

    THE TRUTH SHALL PREVAIL!

You do not seem to get it. This is the begining of the end. This is to tell you guys that if you do not want to accept the domination of the Tygreyans then the next available menu is the disintegration of Ethiopia and safe exit of TPLF to an independent Tygray. Wake up and smell the coffee. By the way “the exit time ” is 10 years from now. You still have to bear the Tygreyans for at least 10 if not 20 years. Enjoy, life is short to squander!!.

  11. Self serving comments. No value for Ethiopian current problems. The writer keep saying the federal government, what we have in Addis is a GANGESTERS who are bent to loot and DISTROY ETHIOPIA. Who gave weyane a mandate to decide on the status of Addis or finfine. What is important for every Ethiopian is freedom and freedom only. Only a free society decision is which decide the future of their affairs be it territories or POLETICS.

  12. Walelign Mekonnen’s generation was brainwashed with the notions of nation/nationalities and self-determination up to cession. This was a disguised scheme to break up Ethiopia. The notion was buffed using the writing of Roman Prochaska. This was latter institutionalized by CIA. Walelign fully embraced the scheme out of innocence. https://tassew.wordpress.com/2010/01/03/on-the-question-of-ethiopian-nationlities-walelegn-as-roman-prochazka/

CIA employed TPLF TO FULLY implement the breaking Ethiopia up scheme. Note that CIA is still the architect of the policies and tricks used by TPLF.

  14. It is funny, people think, that Addis Ababa disappears just like that. Addis Ababa shall live for ever, it is the tplf/woyane the tigre regime that must be wiped out from the face of the earth. The tplf tigre regime has nothing to do with Addis or even Ethiopia they mus be wiped out.

The problem is the cowordness of the Ethiopians. Ethiopian must get united and fight the tplf if they want to survive. They have give up the funcy ethnic story. The Oromos and the Amharas have the moralobligation to save Ethiopia and Addis instead of hiding behind the 75 sq m piece of land.

    Hodamoch is the problem.
Fight for Ethiopia. Without Ethiopia neither the Amharas can survive.

  16. I can understand your anxiety Mr Kibur Nega. In your article you tried to make an appeal to TPLF / EPRDF if they could reverse their stance regarding our capital city Addis Ababa that is being established by Emperor Minilik.

The fact of the matter is we Ethiopians never give up to Woyane TPLF / EPRDF and seeking their willingness to claim our rights for our country. They are toxic malicious and wicked creatures so must be removed by and cost

Concerning the people of Oromo they have created one arch enemy on the east they are Somalies and now the people of Addis and beyond so if they opted to play with this fire they will be sandwich in between.

  17. The preachers of Anti-Oromo give all the rights under the sun to the settlers in Oromia. But they try to dispossess the Oromo nation even the basic human rights. According to their assertions the Oromo deserve nothing in their homeland. Without reservation and protest the Oromo have to accept their fake unity. This is ridiculous and a futile attempt. These individuals have not still realize why the Oromo have been fighting and resisting the policies of Woyane in the last 26 years.

  18. Gammadaa,
    Excellent comment!!
I read all the comments I am more related to your comment.
Guess what, I am Amhara activist!
It seems that Oromos are beginning to understand the pain of 90% of the poor Amhara population and vise-versa. The above writer and his kinds are hardliner Ethiopianists stuck in old mindset.

All this hoya-hoye for nothing, they should go listen to Oromo intellectual groups talking about the recent draft legislation, all are saying that nothing in it that will advantage Oromos, it is just cosmetic change trying to confuse the residents of Addis. For instance, speaking afan oromo is a universal right, access to hospital again not a big deal, etc etc. In fact the new draft raises more questions than answers, if we remember woyane leaked the original draft to Alemneh Wasse, when Oromo groups rejected it by saying that their struggle is not for a special treatment but for equal rights, then the following day woyane put blame on ANDM(Beaaden)?, now after correction the second draft released to the media.

What Oromos want is freedom, justice, equality, humanity, democracy deciding their destiny together with fellow Ethiopians, not throwing a little meat at them like a dog, it is like you took my trouser, my shirt, my shoe, my jacket, my dignity, and then you give me back underwear, fu$k off woyane. The whole point of this new draft is trying to answer the recent protest, to keep apart Amharas and Oromos, and to brig back the Master-plan through the back door. Remember Abay Tsehaye affirmed “Yitegeberal” “Lik-Yigebal”.

    • Dear friend,

thank you for understanding my points of view. For me all human beings are equal. Our struggle is not against ordinary Amhara or Tigre. We are only against those with outdated and inhuman mentality. Against those who try to promote the policy of discrimination and latent segregation .

The Oromo culture and language are for the helpful if they accept it genuinely. The good side of the Amhara culture and language are also helpful for the Oromo.

Therefore, let’s promote fairness, open mindedness and mutual understanding. For all the Ethiopian people afaan Oromoo is exactly important as Amharic. With mutual understanding we can solve all our problems and heal our wound. Hostility is destructive.

The claim of  Kebour Ghanna is similar to that of some racist white settlers of Southafrica who tried to claim their own state within Southafrica at the beginning of the 90th. Those individuals were growing up with the mentalities of apartheid and they cannot accept the Africans as an equal human being. Therefore, it was a shame for them to live with the Africans as an equal citizen. We have been entertaining such latent apartheid and segregation mentalists in Ethiopia since the Era of Menelik. For them the Oromo nation is subhuman and it’s cultural and social values are irrelevant. But now the time of such individuals with antihuman mentalities is up. No more segregation and discrimination of the Oromo nation and it’s culture and laguage in it’s own homeland. The sleeping giant is awake. The dreams of persons like Kebour Gehanna are just a sign of desperation and hopelessness. No one can help them.

  19. I have to admit I am happy I left this country 25 years ago. Why I left? Well, As soon as TPLF controlled addis. I was in AAU.Few of us went out to protest the landlocking of Ethiopia. We did not have guns or even a stone. We did not throw a stone either. We just said no landlocking Ethiopia. Three of my friends were shot on the spot just for expressing their concern. I have seen many other things then. I said, no this is not the country I wanted. I knew then 25 years ago what was coming. TPLF now become a real monster in Ethiopia. Shall I say it again? TPLF the real monster worse than derg. Derg was more visionary short of his limitation and stormy beginning. Derg never pitted people against each other. TPLF now the liberators has become the real monster. But they will not succeed to destroy Ethiopia since there are many good Ethiopian people. If God wills, the only solution is to burn Arat kilo into ashes and drive them out from power. Balegiewoch
