The family of a British man imprisoned in Ethiopia have been told they can visit him for the first time since he was illegally captured nearly three years ago.
On Monday Andy Tsege will have been held for 1,000 days.
He was seized while at an international airport in Yemen, and taken to Ethiopia where he’d already been tried and sentenced to death in his absence.
The Ethiopians regard him as a terrorist, but his family say he’s simply an outspoken critic of the government.
Mr Tsege was born in Ethiopia but sought political asylum in London and was granted British citizenship.
The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has been under pressure to lobby the Ethiopian government for his release, and he raised the case with the country’s PM during a visit to Addis Ababa on Thursday.
Mr Johnson said: “He now has a lawyer and he’s been able to see that lawyer.
“We received undertakings that there would be regular access to that lawyer and an offer for Mr Tsege’s wife and family to come out and see him, so we certainly raised those issues and made progress.”
Mr Tsege’s wife, Yemi Hailemariam, told Sky News she hoped it was a genuine offer – as she was previously warned she would be arrested if she travelled to Ethiopia.
“Although I’m very happy that he is finally able to see a lawyer after two and a half years, the coincidence surprises me that the day before the Foreign Secretary arrives in Ethiopia he suddenly gets access to a lawyer.”
Maya Foa, from Reprieve, said Mr Johnson should have been trying to bring Mr Tsege home on his plane, but told Sky News: “I am hopeful that this visit will see a change in attitude from the Foreign Office, and that what we will see is an attempt to negotiate Andy’s release back to the UK.
“This is a man who has done nothing wrong.”
The news comes as the High Street retailer Lush stages a campaign in support of Mr Tsege.
Staff in all 102 UK stores have been briefed to discuss his case with customers and have been selling bath bombs embedded with his picture under the slogan Buy One Set One Free.
The company’s ethical director, Hilary Jones, said: “We’ve had queues at our iPads to sign up to the petition.
“We’ve had people really interested. if you tell Andy’s story it really affects people and they can see the total injustice.”

  3. It was very obvious that this family man was illegally kidnapped from another sovereign nation and thrown in jail. Even though I suspect a secret collusion between the other demon in Asmara and his carbon copies in Addis(Finfine), his abduction during travel on a foreign soil is illegal that amounts to kidnapping. He should be released immediately and returned to his family. That was a sheer act of vagabonds done with no regards for international law. But his well planned and so accurately accomplished scheme must have been executed with full cognizance of the other demon in Asmara-Al-Toweel Isaias. That must have been a stark lesson for those who are now congregated in Asmara scavenging at the Isaias’ dump sites. He either will wink them away one by one or he will make them unheard of whenever he feels like it. In any case, every iota of pressure must be imposed on the regime back in the old country to secure the release of this family man. I hope and pray to see that day.

  4. Hi guys,

Andy shot at the wrong asshole, now he’s in deep s***.

Luckily, there are no prisoners in death row in Ethiopia since the country does not enforce death sentences. A little over hundred prisoners are held under death sentences but they are unlikely to face the sentences executed on nay of them.

Although the country still has death penalty in the criminal law and courts sentence people to death for very serious crimes such as murder, treason, armed conspiracy, genocide, outrages against the constitution, it has not enforced the sentences for almost two decades except in two cases which took place in 1998 and 2007.

Given this fact, the country appears to have unstated policy and established practice of not carrying out death sentences which makes it a de facto abolitionist. The fact that it commutes death sentences from time to time lends credence to this view.

The Foreign Secretary knows what he’s talking about when he said “we do … lobby … against the application of the death penalty . . .” Unlike what Reprieve demands he wants to “… leave Ethiopia without Andy.” Reprieve’s persistence on mentioning “death row” which the country has abandoned is to shame the country and take advantage its reactions. It might help if Andy’s family dissociates itself from Reprieve and its misguided and inflammatory press releases.

The Foreign Secretary’s position “… not to interfere in the legal systems of (Ethiopia)” makes sense. Andy had been tried and sentenced in absentia under Ethiopian laws from which he could have appealed for a review of the convictions and reduced sentences. He had not.

Now Reprieve and his family are demanding Andy’s release and return “home” which the Foreign Secretary does not seem to agree with and work for. I get it why he’s doing that.

If a naturalized British national is tried and sentenced to death or life for advocating and actively participating in violence with intent to overthrow a government in his country of origin, is the British government to force his release simply because he is citizen? What kind of precedent will that create in a country where so many immigrants take citizenship every year? It’s like saying “do whatever crime you want and we’ll get you home safe”. That’s not how governments work.

I say “Bravo” to the Foreign Secretary. He has persuaded Ethiopia to allow Andy visitation right and legal consultancy though it is doubtful if any legal remedy is available at this stage.

What needs is talks on Mr regional security and prosperity” and not interference in its legal system.
