Toxic Propaganda Targeted at Ethiopia and Ethiopian Unity: the Divisive Strategies

The political crisis in Ethiopia is getting various dimensions. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has divided the country along ethnic lines. With its infamous Article 39 of the constitution, TPLF has made secession of ethnic groups a constitutional right. In its 25 years of brutal rule, TPLF-led EPRDF has been inculcating toxic propaganda and hate into young Ethiopians to pit one ethnic group against the other. The cruel ruling of TPLF being with its divisive and hate-filled strategy has brought the country to the current state of political crisis. TPLF has been setting Ethiopia for destruction. The current most pressing problem in Ethiopia is the systemic and multidimensional human right abuse by the TPLF-led regime.

Such threat to the people of Ethiopia and the unity of the country can be averted when Ethiopians stand united, find a common ground and fight tyranny, brutality, and get rid of the TPLF dictatorial regime and the system it established. On the contrary, some self-proclaimed Oromo political leaders, who present themselves as academics, are repeating the very thing they claim to oppose and worsening the suffering of Ethiopians. They are echoing the TPLF strategies that are being used to divide and rule Ethiopia.

These individuals are harboring under their academic rank and engaging in fighting Ethiopia and Ethiopian unity through their noxious and hate-mongering propaganda that they disseminate on the Oromo Media Network (OMN). These individuals’ political platform is just hate to Ethiopia and Ethiopian unity. Among these bad actors are Dr. Tsegaye Ararsa, University of Melbourne; Dr. Abbas Haji Ganamo, Ryerson University; and Jawar Mohammed, OMN; and Etana Habte. These individuals are using OMN and targeting the young Ethiopians from Oromia region who are suffering under the oppressive and brutal power of TPLF.

While it is clear that thousands of Ethiopians are being heinously killed, tortured and imprisoned by the TPLF-led EPRDF, these OMN groups, are exploiting the current dire situations in Ethiopia, manipulating the psychology of the victims, waging a propaganda war on what they call Amhara, Ethiopia and Ethiopian unity. It would be a big mistake to let these individuals and OMN unabated and to let them continue their hate movement that could lead to ethnic strife in Ethiopia and destroy the country and the future of the young generation.

Should we give a free pass to these individuals who poison the whole political discourse in Ethiopia and who ethicize every grievance? Blind acceptance of this toxic propaganda or being aloof of this negative campaign is tantamount to contributing to their destructive agenda. It is akin to letting our house being destroyed by fire. We should not let the divisive fabrication thrive and our country lead into ethnic conflict. Ethiopians from different corners of the country should speak out when such individuals impose their evil views on the already suffering Ethiopians.

OMN and these individuals apply the following strategies to disseminate hate and mobilize people in Oromia areas towards their sinister goal, which is separation of the Oromigna-speaking Ethiopians from the rest of Ethiopia. It is not clear who is behind this hate movement, however, from their practice, we can see this hate group, and OMN uses the following strategies:

Creating a political movement on the basis of Islam and ethnic lines. Jawar Mohammed, the current Executive Director of OMN appealed to Muslims and tried to mobilize Oromos on the basis of Islam. In his words, this what he said: “እኔ ባለሁበት 99 በመቶ ሙስሊም ነው። ደፍሮ ቀና የሚል የለም አንገታቸውን ነው በሜንጫ የምንለው። …. ኦሮሞ በተነካ ቁጥር እስልምና ይነካል። እስልምና በተነካ ቁጥር ኦሮሞ ይነካል። የኦሮሞ ህዝብ መጠናከር የእስልምና መጠናከር ነው። አክሱም ላይ መስጊድ የምትሰሩት ኦሮሞ ሲጠናከር ነው።” This translated as, “Where I live[d] 99% is Muslim. No one can have the courage to stay upright. If they [referring to Christians or Amharas] have the courage to do so, we will hit their neck with sword. Whenever Oromo is affected, Islam is affected. The strength of the Oromo people is the strength of Islam. You can build mosque at Axum when Oromo get stronger.” This is an obvious campaign to create a political Islam, which is extremely dangerous move. Political movement around radical Islam is destroying a number of countries. Radicalizing the Muslim Oromos in Ethiopia will be catastrophe not only for Ethiopia where Christians and Muslims have peacefully lived together for centuries, but also for the entire geographic region.
Fighting Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. This is a recent one being pushed by Dr. Tsegaye Ararsa. This is what Tsegaye Ararsa put on his Facebook: “ If Alithad or its third generation offspring (Alshabab) was a political Islam in Somalia, Ethiopian orthodox church would be the exact opposite of that, i.e., a political ..but even older than the former by thousands of years. Why should the world fight only political Islamists while sparing their dumpiest counter part in the horn of Africa or elsewhere??” By attacking Ethiopian Orthodox Church, this group attempts to attack the long-standing history and the unity of the country
Attacking Ethiopian unity, Ethiopian history, and everything that symbolizes Ethiopia. Tsegaye Ararsa, who was a teacher at the TPLF cadres’ college (Civil Service University) and who is the Dr. Joseph Goebbels of this movement, repeatedly stated, “Ethiopians do not have national identity.” He further tried to elaborate his point saying that Ethiopian identity is for Amhara and Tigre only. Dr. Tsegay Ararsa also wrote, “Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia did deny his being black. This is to smear the name of one of the greatest black African leader. Emperor Menelik II led the Battle of Adwa, defeated the fascist Italian invaders, and inspired black Africans in their struggle for independence. Emperor Menelik II symbolizes Ethiopia and Ethiopian unity. By discrediting his immense contribution that the world witnessed, the hate groups are attacking Ethiopia. Attacking Emperor Menelik II has become the day-to-day activity of OMN. This is done by design to fabricate hate-ridden story and to disintegrate Ethiopia.
Using pseudo-academic discourse and misinforming and misleading the regular people- One of the deliberate deception constantly broadcast by OMN, Aljazeera, Asafa Jalata and Dr. Abbas Haji Ganamo, is that “between 1868 and 1900, half of all Oromo were killed, around 5 million people.” A rational person first asks whether there were 10 million Oromos during that period. This is a white lie by the so-called Professor Abbas Haji Ganamo and Asafa Jalata. An academic should always be skeptic and should question its sources and verify its accuracy. One needs not to be a genius to refute their claim. In 1950, the population of Ethiopia was 18 million. In the last sixty-five years, the Ethiopian population has grown on average by about 2.7% every year. Given this population trend, in 1887, the total Ethiopian population was estimated to be between three to four million. Abbas Haji Ganamo and Asafa Jaleta have been deliberately echoing this poisonous lie to create havoc in Ethiopia. This is a shameful and unethical act in the academic world.
Recently, Dr. Abbas Haji Ganamo, Etana Habte and had Dr. Ezekiel Gabissa apeared on OMN. This discussion clearly shows the severity of hate campaign that this group is propagating. The discussion was very irresponsible, very graphic, and violence inciting in its presentation. May almighty God save Ethiopia. These individuals are setting stage for ethnic war in Ethiopia. These are some of the things what Professor Abbas Haji Ganamo said: “Someone in Bale told me that his father had told him that he had seen when the Minelik’s army had brought a piece of cloth immersed with disease and killed all the members of some of the tribes except one person.“ Professor Ganamo also said that, “the blood of the Oromos killed flew like a flood and joined a river.” Why does a university professor irresponsibly say this on the media without even trying to check the reliability of the information? Was Emperor Menelik’s army of the 1880s so sophisticated to create and handle biological weapons? How could a professor teaching in civilized world believe this and speak on a media? How could a person, with his bare eyes, see and identify a disease-carrying cloth? How many people should be killed at one place for the blood to flow like a flood and join a river? Ethiopians should not let such dangerous white lie unchallenged. The discussion on OMN is reminiscent of the hate propaganda that led to the Arbagugu and Bedeno genocide of the Amharas, whoever was the perpetrator.

Opposing any movement that leads to unity among Ethiopians of various backgrounds: Using seemingly academic discourse, the OMN group ethicizes everything. Any organization that is not organized on the basis of ethnicity or religion is opposed by these hate mongering individuals. They even call those Ethiopians who are not organized on ethnic lines as “homeless politicians”. For this hate group, Ethiopian identity is a hoax. They even went even further and encouraged others to be organized based on ethnicity to destroy the values that glued Ethiopians together irrespective of ethnic differences. This is one of their approaches to dismantle Ethiopian unity.
The most important question here is, why attacking Ethiopia and Ethiopian unity and broadcasting of hate become the top priority of this OMN group while Ethiopians are suffering under the ruthless TPLF. Since November 2015, about 1000 Ethiopians were killed by TPLF-EPRDF. Thousands are imprisoned and being tortured. Thousands are fleeing the country and dying in ocean. The political leaders like Bekele Gerba, Dr. Merara Gudina, Andualem Arage; and journalists like Eskinder Nega and Temesgen Desalign are languishing in the TPLF dungeon. Defenseless Ethiopians are crying for help. Those who committed the crime are walking freely and making the victims laughingstock. Those who killed the young man and forced his mother to sit on her son’s dead body did not face justice. Instead of emancipating Ethiopians who are under the yoke of the brutal TPLF, the OMN group is giving a propaganda opportunity to TPLF and pushing Ethiopia into a civil war. This is a period for the current generation; and this is the foundation for the coming generation. We cannot stay trapped in our past mishaps. We all have a moral obligation to do soul-searching and work together to bring positive changes Ethiopia. By disseminating hate, no one will benefit. When we have differences, we should disagree constructively not to destroy one another. Hate can never ever be a solution.

  2. Leave our gallant freedom fighters Obbo Jawar and his comrades alone.

This so-called professor Larebo knows squat about the history of the glorious people of Oromia. He is reciting what the neftegnas wrote for him. Oromos are the first clearly defined ethnic people on this earth. They populated the entire African landscape from the current day Dar es Salaam as their south eastern starting point and the present day Douala in Cameroon as their Southwestern reaching point. From such southern parallel point they covered the entire northern half of Africa. What do you think Carthage was? It was part of the Oromo Democratic Republic and Hannibal was an Oromo Abbaa Duulaa. I had traveled to the present day and Tunisia where I saw myself places with Oromo names all over the country. The name Tunisia is Oromifaa itself where in archaic Oromifaa it means ‘we have the final point. There is a lot you don’t know about my Oromos. Then when Italy invaded our Horn of Africa region in 1925 we Oromos went to fight them at Adowaa. Our democratically elected president and commander-in-chief was named Jaalataa Waraa Abicu. He fought the invading Italian army with Oromo soldiers alone for 9 months. During those 9 months when he was preoccupied fighting the invading Italian army at Adowaa, the neftgna bandit called Menelik went on rampage and killed about 35 million Oromos. Our president and commander-in-chief finally beat the crap of the Italians at the then Oromo village called Adowaa. But when he returned to his capital city Finfine victorious from the war front in 1925 he found no one and the entire city of 10 million was razed to the ground. Then he had to make a quick decision and left for Arsi and Bale regions. This is a well documented history of my Oromos as it was well researched and confirmed by our well educated Oromo academicians teaching at very respected universities here in the USA such as Kettering, Tennessee, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia and MIT; many universities in Australia, UK, Germany and the Scandinavian countries. All these universities are now busy clearing up of their library shelves of all books written by the neftegnas in the past because they are all fake books fabbed by the neftegna writers. These neftegnas even claim Geez, the language we Oromos created as our palace coded lingua meant for communicating confidential matters and documents.

And there is another well documented discovery unearthed by the same Oromo academicians about the places where the Amhara and Tigre tribes came from. I am not talking about the eternal friends of my Oromos, the Eritreans, here because they have been the inhabitants of their current residence for more than 10,000 years. The Amharas and Tigres used to live in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula living as slaves to our Arab cousins. It was unbearable life for them as slaves. So in the mid 18th century they sent their tribal messengers asking our then democratically elected president Mote Gelchu Aba Soraa for shelter and refuge. You know my Oromos are so generous people. Our president gave them the localities of current Ammaro Sayyonte and Menzia as resting areas. Then less than 2 centuries later they took over the area when we were busy fighting the Italians at Adowaa. This was what actually happened and again it has been well researched by the same well educated Oromo scholars I mentioned above. So stop scolding them. You don’t even qualify to tie their boot straps. You all are witnessing the re-writing of the true history of my glorious people of Oromia. Just sit back and take it and take it well because more on on the way. It will be the right medicine for your intellectual poverty.

Oromos are now waking up. you know this and I hope you learn from The media and posted messages from oromo intellectuals. It is now growing. We can not be ashamed because of people like Jawar (the most evil person), gabissa Ezkile (with little knowledge and selfish) and Assafa Jalata (the most crook and cruel person).
We will hold your neck to death because you are not part of oromos.

We oromos have lived and intermarried with the rest of Ethiopians for thousands of years. You Idiot- you think you are educated but you are moron. Oromos are now awake and against you hate politics. We will burry you. this is what gives peace to us and all Ethiopians.

  5. Since I am on a mission to teach many of you neftegnas just doses of history, here is something that may set you off not because you don’t understand it(what’s new right?) but rather you will be raging in jealousy.
Do you know or have you ever heard a proven history that we Oromos were the first people to design and implement canal system? There was an elaborate system of canal system meant for irrigation and transportation in all of the former Democratic Republic of Oromia. Also, we Oromos were the first engineering people who developed the technology of building the first 2-story residential building in the history of mankind going back to 5,000 years before the Day of Reckoning of our only God Waqaa. Again this also has been well documented by our well educated Oromo scholars. Fragmented that have survived were unearthed by one of same Oromo archaeologists in 2014. All that technology and Oromo innovations were destroyed by the rampaging neftegna bandit called Menelik. I can go on and on telling you stubborn neftegnas every innovation achieved by my glorious people of Oromia. Who do you think the great Hammurabi was? He was an Oromo Motee who gave humanity the first codes of law. He was said to be from an Amorite tribe but that was a misnomer concocted by the neftegnas, That was supposed to say an Oromite tribe. Comprende? You don’t get it, do you? When I say neftegnas, that does not apply to the nationalities of Gondarites and Gojjamians. They were our good neighbors and trade partners until the bandit Menelik killed 2 million of them each in 1923. When he got thru his rampage throughout Gojjamia and Gondaria there were only 100 thousands survivors from the original population of 3 million inhabitants in each of those two republics. That is why we are now teaching them how to fight for their Waqaa given rights. The latest news from Gondaria and Gojjamia is that their gallant freedom fighters have liberated 95% of their respective republics. Waqaa’s Willing, we plan to declare our independence on the same day at the end of this coming month of April. When I say neftegnas I am referring to those who are against the liberation of Oromia, Gojjamia and Gondaria mostly from Ammaro Sayyonte and Menzia.

I was talking to my sister-in-law who is the daughter of the former hard line neftegna and she told me that she can not wait until Oromia becomes an independent nation. 99.9% of the moderate neftegnas who now live in Oromia are all like her that they have pledged allegiance to the coming new Democratic Republic of Oromia. 99.9%!!! 22.

  23. Ethiopia means many things to many people. For me Ethiopia means all the land and all the people. Other people in Africa live peacefully in their lands which white people created for them. Some of those black African countries do have second hand colonizers like Arabs and Indians. Ethiopia didn’t have any second or first colonizers and she was also created by black Africans and then recreated by Ras Gobena and Atse Menilik II after the oromo invasion. Those giants of black leaders were focused and defeated the colonizers, again in 1941.

That is what Ethiopia is. If Oromo was not Ethiopian he would have fought for Mussolini and could’ve gotten a country called Oromia back in 1936 as black slave when even the brittish generals save for colonel Wingate were trying to divide the oromo and the none oromo fighters in Sudan at that time. What happened next was the opposite and Ethiopia resurrected the old flag and became herself again and for that freedom thousands of thousands died fighting or were killed with poison gas.

Today the oromo separatists don’t tell that heroic history because they’ll get millions of oromo enemies that admire the Oromo heroes that saved Ethiopia’s independence. Those Oromo fighters like General Jagema Kello and Colonel Abdisa Aga are permanently resident in any kind of Ethiopians’ psychic. No matter which ethnic group Ethiopians are aware Dejach Geressu was one of the very few leaders who did the impossible and saved Ethiopia’s pride and lives. There were hundreds and upon hundreds of Oromo generals and Oromo intelectuals to this day who some of us believed were ‘neftegnaa’ amara just because they had amharic sounding names or muslim names who did love and did their best for their only county Ethiopia. The oromo separatists can try and admire the four or theree oromos who fought for other countries that wanted to see Ethiopia destroyed and were destroyed. And some who had had enough of the oromo separatists calling them or their ancestors names based on false propagandists’ history might get pissed and start to retaliate. And all that is our problem collectively.

I’m Ethiopian. Ethiopia is my identity. I don’t want to be less or smaller. Oromo heroes or Amhara heroes, they are the same equally Ethiopian heroes that fought for me. Equally important to me are those Ethiopians who are fighting to keep Ethiopia.

the rest is not that important. there is no oromo in his right mind that the killing of amharas in Assosa back then was right, or who believes that in Bedeno and other areas after that was not ethnic cleansing and was not pure evil hitler style. No? every oromo agrees those who did that should face justice. There is nothing that can justify that kind of uncalled for mercenary massacre which was designed to make Amahara die off or get scared.

And yes some of us have raised our eyebrows when some of the best organized were talking to the suspects of those massacres while ignoring most of our Amhara orgs although some of those orgs’ existence depends on destroying the existing and we all have friends or relatives who are members of the well organized group and we could have asked for explanation instead of trying to destroy their effort in a language that can only make the enemy happy.

That has happened before. Why do we repeat our mistakes? While Ethiopians like EPRP and others were fighting each other, the separatists gained momentum and hundreds of brave soldiers of Ethiopia had to fight without the support of Ethiopians and they were defeated and then dismissed after a century of service.

In retrospect we can now say EPRP should’ve learned from Bazil and not even start a war in towns and cities or the others should’ve seen Derg was just another fascist which started of with breaking the law itself by killing sixty minsters and generals without court order. We can now also see what Lidetu Ayalew did to KINIJIT and the others after him in north america and back home. What we are left with now is sending strong ppl like Andaualem to jail and forget them while they are being tortured. Instead of re-orginazing learning from the highly disciplined muslim DIMTSACHEN-YISEMA movement.

I don’t know what is wrong with us. We like destroying strong old and building weaker new. AYNAFAR gets stunned by a new orator and follows him blindly. AYNAFAR also gets persuaded easily by a few words that seem right without thinking because AYNAFAR has been too lazy to think.

in conclusion, there is nothing wrong with being amhara or oromo, one is not better or worse than the other. when amhara speaks afan oromo he has a funny accent, and those who don’t like funny accent no matter how grammatically better than them belong in 16th century and not in 21st.

  24. The key to the future existence of Ethiopia as a nation depends on the response of the Amahara opposition politicians at home and abroad.

Tired of reading mostly confusing and negative comments and propoganda about Ethiopian politics, I jumped on the band wagon to address the critical issue of ethnic politics and Ethiopian patriotism.
As an Ethiopian-born person, I still see that most Ethiopian-born elites who live in Western countries have a diehard snobish mentality. If they realy embrace the Western democratic values, they would promote more regional political freedom and equality. Listen, we live in 21st century. Every body is free. No race, language, or culture is more important or superior to others. Very simple, isnt it? If so stop being scared and start with a new political vision that builds trust, peace, and unity among free Ethiopian nationalties.
EPRDF did not create ethnic politics. It existed as long as Ethiopia existed. Tigreans are patriotic and civilised as Amharas are. They do not want an Amhara dominated system in any form or manifestation. Amharas be ready to work with Tigreans, to live in peace and equalty with other Ethiopians. Therefore, the future of Ethiopia’s unity depends on the response of the Amhara opposition politicians at home and abroad.

Politics require compromise on issues. No political party on earth is supposed to think of itself as a provider of perfect soutions for all political and economic problems of its supporters. Therefore, I do not see any difference between EPRDF mentality and those opposing EPRDF.

Those who are truely interested in engaging in politics and want to make positive contribution should think of compromises.

  25. Some of you have been accusing Obbo Jawar with something he never said.

Where and when did our future Vice President and Foreign Minister of the upcoming Democratic Republic of Oromia His Excellence Obbo Jawar say he will cut off the Christians neck? When? You just making it up. The video you might have seen shows Obbo Jawar telling the audience that in Arsi if an Oromo says anything bad about the neftegnas they, the neftegnas will cut off the Oromo’s neck. That is what and the only thing he said. Period!!! Neftegna extremists are said to have the video dubbed(voice-overed) with something he never said. You know what? That was what was said about Jesus in his time on this earth. Jawar is the 2nd coming of Jesus!!! He is merciful and loves everyone including the more than 15 million moderate neftegnas who now live in Oromia. With his leadership and insistence the entire 15 million of them have just been humanely reset by way of the very old Oromo spiritual ‘Mogasization’ and ‘Ilmaa Gosization’. There will be a law in place that outlaws calling anyone of them ‘neftegnas’ after the independence of Oromia. They will be classified ‘Ilmagosized’ citizens of Oromia. Any one who violates this law will be handed citation at the first offence and will be sentenced to one year in jail after that. Also anyone who calls another Oromo a ‘nigger(galla)’, he/she will be sentenced to 15 years in jail. FYI, there will be no death penalty for any offence in the new Oromia except terrorism. So stop falsely accusing our most revered leader Obbo Jawar.

I have Watched to link you attached and I did not find anything Obbo Jawar said something threatening others. Nothing!!! We Oromos understand the danger of religious fanaticism. That is why Oromia will be a Waqa dominated state, not a Muslim one. That is why the first thing we will do after our independence is to expel all Muslim religious missionaries from Arab countries. Waqa will be our religion, baby!!! Recent reliable survey conducted in Oromia more than 99.9% Oromians can not wait to observe Waqa as their religion. That is with a very clear constitutional demarcation between religion and governance. Our constitution will be a photo copy of the US Constitution. Period! End of story.
