A massive rally called by fearless campaigner: Eskinder Nega

As we all know, Eskinder Nega is one of the most prominent Ethiopians and advocate of Social Justice. Eskinder has been at the forefront of political activism over the past 27 years. He was jailed by ethino-centric EPDRF regime for being a champion of human rights and a voice for voiceless for fellow all Ethiopians regardless of ethnicity, religion etc. Eskinder received many awards from respected international institutions for his tireless and selfless work. He strongly criticized the current EPDRF leaders who dressed up with full of sweet talk but has not shown tangible solution for ongoing problems in Ethiopia political conflicts. In fact, the Oromo extremists group and their foreign sponsors appears to be running the country to even more problems. The current regime has shown extreme patience as extremist take the streets , publicly spread hatred messages, and political bandits robbed several Banks in broad day light. Millions of people has been displaced and killed throughout the country by their hateful propaganda.

Concerned Ethiopians wrote letters to current Prime Minster and issued Press release with several recommendations to help address the political crisis that is threatening the very existence of Ethiopia. The response so far is unsatisfactory. By account of most people , the government occupied itself by none priority tasks. In the meanwhile, the extremists and their foreign sponsors are busy in encouraging ethnic disputes which might escalate to civil war and possible genocide as seen in Rwanda.

Eskinder and his thousands of followers are organized under civic organization called Balderas Council to stop extremists actions in peaceful manner. His organization is none-ethnic. Eskinder has demonstrated dedication, bravery and ready to pay the ultimate sacrifice for sake of protecting human rights for Ethiopians.
Ethiopia current prime minister has been preaching for a year to correct misrule of the past TPLF’S dictatorship and to establish democratic governance. The preaching ended up to be empty. Sadly, he has not put the interest of Ethiopia ahead of his own OPDO party and millions get internally displaced and knocked down to live in abject poverty. Like many, I am angry with his sweet rhetoric as his security agents and police force arrested peaceful opponents. The Oromo extremist groups are attempting to replicate the past 27-years of TPLF’s rule marred with corruption, human right violations and ethnic discrimination.
It is time for all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia to stand behind Eskinder’s organization. Addis Ababa faces the greatest danger in its history by the extremists group. Addis Ababa is a cosmopolitan multinational and multicultural city. It is time who care for our beloved mother land to support the grassroots resistance led by Balderas Council from pushing the country into going deep civil strife . We shall be part of the upcoming pro -democracy protest on October 2, 2012 Ethiopian calendar organized by Balderas Council.
Ethiopia will prevail! The powerful would be vanquished!

  1. Now I am going to say something I never said out loud in the past but which has been in my thought for quite some time. This has to do with creating a country with more than one official language based on the size of its natives plus non natives who speak it. What I would like to see is possibly four or five official languages.

    1) Amharic,
    2) Oromifaa
    3) Somali
    4) Afar
    5) Arabic.
English should maintain its current status in schools.

These five languages have speakers outside the country. For example, Somali language is spoken in Somalia(Somaliland and Puntland included), Djibouti and Kenya. Afar is spoken in Djibouti and Eritrea. Arabic is also widely spoken in Somalia, Sudan, Djibouti and Eritrea(Throughout the Middle East off course). I had the privilege and honor of spending my formative years with the noble peoples of Somali and Afars. I can manage basic communication in them. I may not that proficient in it but I can hold myself in Amharic also. Let me put it this way. I won’t go hungry and homeless if you let me loose in any of these regions. What needs to be done is to organize linguistic and education experts and come up with a curriculum that makes learning and mastering these glorious languages a breeze. These are all beautiful languages. Let’s start with teaching the children at an early age these languages and I am quite sure very majority of them will grow up to be proficient in speaking them the rest of their lives. It will help minimize and even eradicate any misunderstanding that has been lingering among them.

The other conclusion I came up with lately is avoiding someone from the three ethnic groups as the next prime minister. We have seen it all. The individual can be the most qualified for the job. But coming from Tigray, Amhara and Oromo ethnic background does not allow him/her to be independent at all times. There will be a boatload of baggage that follows him/her all the way to his office. He will not be left alone. These three, as we can see it all now, have destructive bigots running amok in their regions that when they see someone they think is one of them, will throw every possible distracting stone at him/her. I would like to see an Afar or a Somali as the next prime minister. These two are the only ones that can do their work without being called a neftegna or ethnic extremist. These two have very capable and well qualified politicians among them. And they have shown their commitment to live in a union with the rest of 80 plus ethnic groups for the last century.

Again this is my personal thought which I have been sharing with my close friends who hail from various ethnic groups for quite some time now. You can agree or disagree with it. But I ask you all to remain civil just as our legendary custom in telling me your different ideas.

  2. I left out the following opening statement by accident:

My best advice is for these two groups to calm down and work together to sort out any issues raised by both. The time now is not like no other. It may have similarities to one other time from the past in the mid 1970’s but this one looks like the last gasp(chance) before unprecedented mayhem. I wish both sides harness their so heated emotions but rather set their eyes on the prize which is to work together hand in hand to lead the country to a system where the rights of the individual are protected by the law and no one is allowed to be above the law.

  3. 5 languages? Do you realize what it means? Let me give you a hint. You are asking to translate all documentation in the country to be translated in 5 languages!!! Yes, we are so rich that we can afford to do it?!?! We do not have other priorities!!! Ethiopia is not the only country using different dialects. Ethiopia has been blessed to have a written and spoken language in the continent where it has worked for centuries, no we are so backwards that we are fighting over nonsense like this that we are close to a civil war. May God deliver us from evil.

  5. Agree with you brother Ittu Aba Cards except that English should be made lingua franca for education and communication medium. As for Skinder and his Baladera group, it seems they are pouring bmore fuel on the he fair at this critical times and don’t they are immune from ethnic secteriaism sentiments and political manipulation. What makes them from Jawar and company one wonders. Apparently little or nothing.

  7. Every Ethiopian Citizen who is concerned for his/her birthright and Ethiopia as a country should show a solidarity for the call of demonstration by ‘YEADDIS ABEBA BALADERA MIKERE BETE’, who stands for all Ethiopian citizens who live in the capital city of Ethiopia Addis Abeba. You need to show your show of force to intimidate the evil fanatic Oromo and radical Oromo Islamism group lead by OPDO chairman Abeye Ahmed.

  9. Make sure you will not use Geez alphabet. I suggest also you use Arabic, English, Latin alphabet because Geez belongs to Agazian. Geez = Agazian. Afar part of Agazian, in all aspect, may be Oromara, and I do not think Somali needs you. I think you need afar for Asab? kk, but Afar has been through history with Tigrai and Eritrea even before the fake Ethiopia .

  10. Dear Tsion,

Why not? 5 languages should even be for starter. The thought should be that of targeting the strategy. In interim it requires a lot of work like you said making essential documents available in all 5 languages. I strongly believe that the required linguistic skill is already there. The old country has more than enough intellectual horsepower to make that happen in less than half a decade. Strategic wise if the Afar language is not one of them, it will be a nasty mistake. Yet at the beginning there will be a push back by various individuals but I really believe that such an opposition will be confined as such, just individuals. I will give you my personal experience. In my division at the previous employer before I retired, there were a sizable skilled workers who were not proficient in English. I am a strong believer in TQC(TQM) and I demanded written procedures for all manufacturing activities. Every procedure must be written in clear and elementary language that a new employer will have no excuses of not understanding it. Procedures were well written but our good folks of Latin heritage could not understand them. Someone has to explain to them in Spanish. That job was left to the few Latino team leaders/foremen I had at the large factory. So I took it upon myself to take a crash course in Spanish at a junior college nearby. Then I was permitted to hire a Spanish language teacher to help us translate all the job procedures. In less than a year on a part time basis we were able to have all procedures available in Spanish also. That was way back in the 1980’s. You see, if there is the will, it is all possible. The other experience I had was when I traveled to Southern China. I took a crash course in the Mandarin version of the Chinese language so nothing would be lost in the translation. The Cantonese version was not necessary because the folks in Hong Kong speak very good English. The Taiwanese also speak good English but Mandarin was widely spoken. Speaking more languages, that by itself helps minimize extremely the chance of misunderstanding. That is a good thing, not a bad thing. Our old country needs a boatload of understanding one another and cut back all traces of misunderstanding. That is what bigots of our day have been exploiting. They see misunderstanding by the people of what you and I are saying and then they will run with it. You see, when the common man/woman in my own Oromia hears someone using the term ‘Oromo extremists’ the bigots there will tell him/her that ‘neftegna Oromo hater’ is calling all of you extremists in Amharic or English. For the old country having languages spoken across its borders is a priceless wealth and not reason for destitution and deadly misunderstanding.

I have been sharing my opinion about this with my Warra Chercher friends who are not Oromos over the years and they were unanimous in their response: Bring It On!! They were born and grew up among Oromos and they are proficient bi-lingual. Some of them even speak basic Somali like me. Again, this is a do or stay destined to oblivion for the old country. Everyone will sink together with no one left standing and still not understanding each other!!!!

Finally I would like to praise you profusely for staying civil in your comment. Blessings to you and your family!!!!

  12. Mahler,

You can say whatever your ideologues are telling you to do about me. I’m not surprised and have expected comments like yours because I know it is the cost of making an opinion known. I hope and pray that The Almighty Our Creator will guide you in harnessing your raw emotion.

Meanwhile, I would like to elaborate something I might have missed in my original comment. English and Amharic should maintain their current status because both languages have already spread throughout the country and are well developed more than all other languages in the country. Those of you who accuse a language as a symbol of oppression I am wondering what is next for you? Injera? Chicken red sauce? The way how ‘those neftegnas’ walk and talk? How about that chow mein? How about that pizza I saw a ‘neftegna’ having for lunch about 10 years ago? Someone please stop me here from citing more and more examples before you pass out because from the look of it, I ain’t gonna stop from citing!!! Wait a minute! I have a live one for you! How about the way that long time warra Chercher friend of mine has been looking at me for all these years? According to your race classification ‘Das Kapital’ blessed book he is a bona fide ‘Neftegna’!!! Ok , I will stop here!!!!

  14. Language is not the issue. Ethiopians are speaking more than 80 languages for more than 2 centuries.
The issue now is justice and commitment to get it served. The head of the government is talking golden talks day in/day out. However, he has harbored criminals and very sad to say his security and heart seems to be rooted in the criminal circle. Above all, these phenomena are highly masked and sophisticated. I assume alien calculated and sponsored. He is failing Ethiopia/Ethiopians.

Abey is ingenious in talking love, justice and prosperity. I am afraid that he is willingly or otherwise leading the nation and the people to the opposite. I think he need to be checked otherwise be summoned.
