Ethiopian-born MKs expressed their grief for the four Ethiopian officials killed on Saturday during two attacks in which a general attempted to seize control of the northern state of Amhara. Army chief of staff Seare Mekonnen and another retired general were shot dead in Mekonnen’s home by a bodyguard. A separate but related attack left state president of Amhara Ambachew Mekonnen and his adviser dead, and the state attorney-general wounded.

The office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that Amhara security head General Asaminew Tsige instigated the attacks in an effort to seize control of Amhara, where ethnic tensions have been increasing as the country undergoes unprecedented political and military reform.

Since Abiy took office last year, he has backed the release of political prisoners, removal of bans on political parties, and prosecution of officials implicated in human rights abuses.

“There [are] a lot of Ethiopians that admire Abiy Ahmed, who is trying to bring Ethiopia to a new period of time,” said Pnina Tamano-Shata, the first Ethiopian-born woman elected to the Knesset, who immigrated to Israel in 1984 as part of Operation Moses. “It has not been easy for him. We are hoping that everything will be alright.”

The news has brought renewed urgency to the ongoing effort of facilitating the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Gadi Yevarkan, an Ethiopian-born MK elected to the Knesset in April, said Israelis “who have family in Ethiopia are worried.”

According to Yevarkan, the heightened tensions should warrant an analogous response as “every person that the Israeli government has deemed entitled to immigrate to Israel must be able to immigrate immediately.” Although confident of the correct approach, Yevarken noted his doubts adding, “I don’t know if I can say this will happen, but I know I am pushing for it to happen.”

For Yevarkan, concern over the unrest in Ethiopia follows a moment of triumph, when successful negotiations between Israel and Ethiopia led to the release of Menashe Levy, an Israeli citizen detained in Ethiopia for more than four years following an indictment for tax evasion. According to Levy’s family, with whom the MK has been in contact, Levy suffered from violent assault from another inmate while imprisoned.

“Ethiopia has a special place for me, and therefore, everything that occurs there concerns me,” Yevarkan said. “What happened with the attempted coup is very hard, but I am sure that the Ethiopian nation will prevail over what happened yesterday. She has existed independently for more than 3,500 years, she has overcome difficult wars, more difficult than what has happened now, and therefore I am filled with hope and prayer that she will return to greatness.”

  1. is more likely to be what happened:
    1. There was no coup of the regional government. It was a planned operation by the ODP government (Abiy Ahmed called “OPERATION” during his empty press briefing)
    2. The ODP government objective was to suppress the Amhara Region the same way they have suppressed the people of Addis Ababa
    3. General Asaminew Tsige has publicly confronted the ODP federal government unlike the rest of the ADP that has become a ODP’s puppet. The ODP government had to quash him in order quash resistance in the Amhara Region who were giving platform to Eskider Nega’s movement.
    4. ODP launched the operation Saturday evening likely because General Asaminew Tsige rightully opposed action against the public meeting Eskinder Nega planned in Bahir Dar for Sunday.
    5. ODP also KILLED the defense chief of staff General Seare Mekonnen because he was an obstacle and a liability to executing the operation. It also clears the position for ODP’ Birhanu Jula. Now ODP will have total control of the chain of command: PM, defence minister, chief of staff …(Note: they are telling us a nameless body guard killed him. They didn’t tell us his name because such a person doesn’t exist!)
    6. The ODP government had stated they have captured General Asaminew Tsige. Now it seems they have changed their story. It is possible that they have captured him but have or want kill him because he will be a liability if they keep him alive.
    7. ODP officials have gone to the airwaves one after the other to make people accept their story as the truth by repeating the same empty talking points again and again.

CURRENTLY, ODP IS ETHIOPIA’S WORST ENEMY! If ODP succeeds in this operation, it will be the beginning of the end for any hope for Ethiopia.

  3. General Asaminew was not about to just simply sit down and watch Ethiopia go to hell with the EPRDF elites scandalous leadership , he made so many actions and said so many things that clearly expressed what his stands were in regards to EPRDF’s actions against Amaras. EPRDF shot him down to shut him up because they didn’t like his stands. They wanted him and all his supporters dead.

Now we Amaras clearly identified the sophistication of the scandalous genocide ethnic cleansing crimes against humanity perpetrated against many Ethiopians especially against Amaras by EPRDF. Asaminew might be dead but his spirit of Amara rising against EPRDF is more alive than ever . EPRDF even killed the EPRDF member Ambachew because he was simply Amara. EPRDF didn’t kill Abdi Alley of Somali but killed Ambachew , Saere …… No wonder Bereket Simon turned himself in voluntarily, I guess he knew it is safer in prison than outside.

  4. Dr. Abiye swam with Amara’s blood today. This assassination plot orchestrated by TPLF and Dr. Abiye finalized when he visited Mekele about a week ago. TPLF resents General Seare looking for ways to get rid of him. TPLF and Abiye bonded by a common interest destroying Amara region. The plan was weakened Amara regional government by assassinating as many officials including Dr. Ambachew and blame or kill General Asaminew, get rid of Seare was easy to put the blame on the Amara General. General Gezai was in the wrong place at the wrong time. General Asaminew loves his country, served his country, imprisoned by TPLF over seven years, and a hero, unlike these Oromo officials including Dr. Abiye who served TPLF by killing and imprisonment of their own people. Abiye and TPLF afraid of General Asaminew because he is strengthing Amara regional security and getting rid of TPLF agents.

  5. Without Dr. Ambachew Mekonnen the Amara region is doomed to become the terrorists breeding ground of the horn of Africa.

Dr. Ambachew Mekonnen was the person who solely brought peace in the most volatile part of Ethiopia, the Amara region. Since he got to power Amara region’s economy experienced the fastest growth rate ever with unemployment hitting an all time low right away. It is highly unlikely these achievements will continue without his plan being followed.
