Djibouti (HAN) April 4, 2014: A Member of Ethiopia’s largest opposition party UDJ blamed Egypt’s financial assistance to Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia for spreading terrorism in the horn of Africa. According to MP Girma Seifu of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, American aid to Egypt is being diverted to finance terrorists in Somalia as Cairo seeks to weaken Addis Ababa and stop construction of the Ethiopian Dam.
Girma-Seifu-Maru. “American taxpayers should demand answers from the Obama administration on why billions of their money is going to a country that funds terrorism in East Africa,” said Mr. Girma. According to a New York Times report on June 6, 2013, several Egyptian government officials were secretly taped discussing ways to increase funding for militants in East Africa in order to destabilze upstream Nile basin countries.

Ethiopian Member of parliment, Girma cited several United Nations (UN) weapons Monitoring Group’s evidence that show Egyptian arms support to Somali militants, some of whom have killed western tourists in East Africa. The UN document states that Egypt is also providing “intensive military and ideological training” to al Shabab, the same active group with terrorists like Abu Mansoor Al Amriki who was on FBI’s Most Wanted terror list.  The Ethiopian opposition MP said he is calling on all the Ethiopian Diaspora in America to unite and “take legal action” and inform their local US congressmen.

The MP also said Egypt and creditors blocking finance for the dam project is a “crime against the poor people of Ethiopia.” He urged the World Bank (WB) and IMF not to give in to “corrupt”Egyptian lobbyists who are blocking the loans for the Ethiopian mega dam. The official asked the West to help Ethiopia build the infrastructure needed to feed itself instead of making the country forever dependent on food aid.

Meanwhile; The Al-Shahab connections come at a time when many Canadian citizens have gone to fight in Syria as jihadists. In January, Canadian Security Intelligence Services (CSIS) presented a report noting the key danger of Canadians returning from fighting abroad with Al Qaeda-linked terror groups; such Al-Shabab militants in Southern Somalia

If these traveling Canadians “participate in a foreign conflict or train with a terrorist group, they might return with certain operational skills that can be deployed themselves or taught to fellow Canadian extremists. Either way, this is a serious security threat to Canada,” notes the report.

  1. There is no doubt that part of the continent, North-east Africa is in trouble as it has been one of the major sources of conflicts, instability and volatility. And it is needless to say that geopolitics ( the Red Sea , the transnational rivers such as the Nile and its very strategic link with the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea) is extremely sensitive and hugely challenging . And what is very sad is that governments (ruling groups -elites) of all countries of this region in general and the Horn of Africa in particular are using any destabilizing tactic or means in order to stay in power and enrich themselves and their cronies . I do not think the destabilizing attempt by Egypt ( due to the Nile) is neither something surprising nor unusual . This is strongly expected especially at this time of irritated atmosphere ( the on going project -the grand dam) . Yes, it is the right thing to give highl level of attention to this very unhealthy , if not dangerous trend , and have well-informed , rational, wisely /carefully crafted critics and if necessary strongly- worded response . However, this kind of move will remain severely incomplete and even will take us back to the deadly vicious circle as long as we do not we work hard to put our own houses in order, or if we do not strive much more strongly to bring about a political system that could genuinely win the legitimacy of its own people . Like it or not , focusing on blaming game and externalizing the very cause for our age-old instability and for our current general crisis we are suffering from will not be going anywhere. And there is no doubt that one of the games being played by the governments of the region such as Egypt , and even those who seem friendly towards us but with dancing with others behind the scene badly destructs us from establishing a democratic system that makes our national interests much more secured, and formulating a foreign policy that should promote regional stability and trustworthiness. Sallow it or not, TPLF/EPRDF as a ruing party that makes instability the main weapon of its political perpetuation will continue playing its own deadly card. And that is the string reason for making our front of struggle at home more effective , urgent and irreversibly realizable.

  2. Friend Girma Maru,
Why start beating around the bush when you know that the elephant is right on your door? Are you tired of or afraid of pointing at the real culprits? The real curse of the nation is right there before your eyes, WEYANES!!!! If you are afraid of pointing out bluntly to the real cause of misery and poverty, then I say shut up!! I mean you can write about anything you want, but stop pretending to be advocate of the broad mass.
For heaven sake this nation is dying, people are hurting by each passing days, and I urge you to stick to the target, the WEYANES! These are the curses of the nation, and the fight must continue on every side and by all means until they are removed from that land! If it takes another Twenty years so be it! But we must not let this fight halt for a moment! if we don’t live that long and see it, then our children will step in our shoe and continue on!!
Every citizen of that nation, every God fearing citizen of Ethiopia, will have no peace or rest until this curse is removed from that nation! And it won’t be long! but now is not the time to look the other way, and in to something!
Leave Egypt alone, sooner or later one of these days you will find Weyanes, trading you and the so called ” renaissance dam” at the Cairo Commodity exchange for the cheapest price, like they did to many of the fertile lands of the country!!

God shall remove the curse (WEYENE) from the land in His time!
He shall wipe away the tears from every eyes! and He will heal the land!!
Until then the Fight will go on! Victory is on the horizon!!

  4. EGYPT’S OUTDATED GAME COMPROMISED, AND DECOLONIZATION OF THE NILE RIVER FROM EGYPT CONTENU`S.

This news is not something new, the Islamic EGYPT government has been financing anti Christian Ethiopia for decades, directly and indirectly. Egypt has been trying hard to divide and weaken Ethiopia for centures in order to preserve and dominate the Nile river water flow.
Now the time has come, Egypt has to face Ethiopians face to face.

EUROPE GAVE UP THE IDEA OF COLONIZATION, NOW THE OUTDATED EGYPT GOV MUST GIVE UP ITS OUTDATED SYSTEMIC COLONIZATION AND DOMINATION MENTALITY. WE ETHIOPIANS WILL NOT ALLOW COLONIZATION OF OUR RESOURCE (RIVERS).
