Europian Union: Statement by the Spokesperson on the recent violent clashes in Ethiopia

“Violence in the Oromia and Amhara regions of Ethiopia, including reports of killings of protesters as well as of members of the security forces, is deeply worrying.

We express our condolences to all those affected.

Everyone must refrain from the use of force as further violence can only be an obstacle to peaceful solutions.

The Federal Ethiopian constitution offers mechanisms which should be used by all sides to address the grievances behind the recent protests through constructive dialogue and engagement, without delay.”

  3. Where does F. Shewakena stand on E.U. press release? He arrogantly dismissed the statmement the U.S. Embassy in Addis released calling it “ridiculous and meaningless”. The statement of the U.S. Embassy is similar if not identical to the press release of the E.U.

I reacted angrily to Shewakena’s senseless accusation of the Embassy as follows for which I envisaged a well thoughtout reply which did not come. I’m content with the press release from E.U. as well.

Here is my reaction to Shewakena’s comment on U.S. Embassy statement which is equally valid to the E.U. press release.

“I wonder why F. Shewakena expected the U.S. to encourage more protests by telling the protesters what they’re doing is the right thing. As we saw it for months and particularly in the past few weeks, encouraging protests means more injury and death to people and destruction of property. Unless the protests are peaceful, there is no need to encourage protests accompanied by violence. It is good that they did not do that.

The Middle East and North Africa are living proof of total devastation beyond fix resulting from the West’s support of peoples’ efforts to overthrow governments. Once armed conflicts reached a stage of no return, the West intervened militarily to assist the armed resistance which eventually devastated and dissimated the very people it was supposed to protect. Is that what the Shewakena wants for Ethiopia and Ethiopians? I suggest he reflects before he barking up the wrong tree.

Why should the U.S. Embassy be ashamed for expressing concern over the violence the country is undergoing now? Is expressing concern over violence “ridiculous and meaningless”? The statement of the Embassy says it has “noted reports that protestors and security officials have been injured or killed”. Isn’t that what we all hear and know until now? I mean injury and death. Who knows exactly how many got injured or killed and from which side? Reports circulating are many and there are claims and counter-claims on the injured and dead. In the absence of non-partisan media on the ground – which I believe does not exist now – it is fair to suspect all reports as partisan.

Accusing the Embassy of the effort “not to antagonize the regime that has deployed its army and kills unarmed people and mass incarcerating them” is meaningless. No doubt that the government is using its army to kill and incarcerate protesters, but can one be sure the people are unarmed? ESAT and other opposition diasora media are reporting that the people are armed and fighting with government soldiers and have killed many. So, why lie about raw facts?

In almost every Wester country, permission is required for demonstration. It might be called notifying the government or obtain clearance, but it is all about getting permission. We have seen in the West demonstators without permission asked to disperse and the use of force to disperse them if they refuse to comply. Throwing stones and other stuff results in the use of force sometimes deadly ones. I fell law enforcement institutions act in a similar fashion everywhere.

One important aspect of the statement of the Embassy is the expression of condolences to those who suffered as a result of the violence. I believe this includes both family members of law enforcement officers and that of protesters. The Embassy has also expressed regrets on damage to livelihoods and economic development.

Personally, I am grateful that they rightly identified the most serous problem associated with the uprising right now. “The damage to social fabric that the violence brings.” I think this refers to inter-ethnic conflict that might degenerate to civil war at least in the northern part of the country namely between Tigre and Amara. Historcal contenders for power, their conflict might tranfigure the country beyond recognition – undoubtedly for the bad.

Finally the Embassy urged all parties to support those who are seeking constructive dialog and peaceful solutions. Luckily, this suggests there are people working on dialogue and peaceful solution. A recent report on Addis Standard suggested that AU will hold “peace building and national concensus” conference at the end of this month in which the government and its opposition both in and out of the country will sit to talk.

I like how the statement concluded: “We reaffirm our call to respect the constitutionally enshrined rights of all citizens, including those with opposition views, to gather peacefully, and to express their opinions.” That’s exactly what all of us should do.

Thank you U.S. Embassy and E.U. for your measured statement and press release encouraging the respect of the constitution by all sides with a view to peacefully solve problems.

    • That is how you understood the press release that says the ‘demonstrations have no permit/approval’ from the government — does the press man at US embassy ever read the woyane constitution, the chapter that says one has to inform government about demonstrations. I guess, informing & seeking permission are two different things. Hanna, you need to learn more about the root cause of the conflict today — who do you think planted these ugly division among the people of Ethiopia. The official policy of divide and rule, according to you is okay and be tolerated when it benefits the narrow nationalists — when it comes to the massive population then it should be condemned. ?? — by the way did you watch the Olympics swimming contest yesterday? that is the ugly face of corrupt regime…

  6. This person calling herself Hanna must either be extremely stupid, naive or a ball point mercenary in the service of forces hostile to Ethiopia.

American government’s expressed concern for what is taking place in Ethiopia is nominal and disingenuous. America’ position should not bother us fo it has historically been inimical to our interest.

Does this woman know ( mentioning her name again nauseates me sincerely) that America is cognizant of the fact that TPLF/Woyane was a terrorist organisation? Does she know that it was the USA which supported the criminal outfit and installed it in power and helped Eritrea secede?

Does she know that the occupation force of Tigres, the TPLF, at best represents 5% of Ethiopia’s population? Does she know that TPLF traitors who fought alongside Eritreans to partition Ethiopia, would have been accused of high treason anywhere in the World? Does she know what the price of high treason is in any country?
Does she know of America’s repeated betrayal of Ethiopia often at its darkest hours?

Perhaps it does not bother her that America’s Secretary of State, Cordell Hull sent a telegram to congratulate Italy’s Fascist leader Mussolini on the victorious entry of his troops in Ethiopia’s capital in 1935? Does she know that Mussolini was hanged up side down while his American cheer leader Hull was conferred upon the Nobel Peace Prize?

America was privy to the cruel UN decision by the League of Nation ( the predecessor of the UN) to lay arms embargo on both victimized Ethiopia and guilty party, Italy, one of the leading producers of weapons in the world then. This happened despite the fact that Ethiopia was a founding member that worthless institution of the powerful West.

America has indeed betrayed us on numerous occasion. It was Carter’s America that disgracefully refused to furnish Ethiopia with the requisite armaments for which advanced payment has been made as Somalia was waging a war of aggression on Ethiopia. It betrayed us while we were in a state of existential crisis. That prompted the rogue military junta to turn to the Soviet Union.

And finally, America gave these mercenaries a blessing to dismantle Ethiopia in haste.
I have credible information that the American Embassy routinely provides scholarship invariably to Tigre nominated by the regime at the expense of other Ethiopians, the 95% majority. This is not a fact like the Olympic swimmer, the burly Tigre who made our country a laughing stock this week in Brazil.
If this woman has a functioning head with a tinge of conscience, she should not have questioned those who have rightly interrogated America’s position on overt genocidal war of Tigre occupation forces against Ethiopians today.
I hope what I have jotted will open your eyes. But I very much doubt it as you are seemingly bereft of logic, a sense of history or justice.
Ethiopia has always arisen even the likes of America were not with us.

  7. I’ve read some of Hanna’s comments on this page and many others. She is one those rare girls who “take the bull by the horns”. I wish her to keep it up.

Unlike many diaspora ethiopians (note “e” in small letter), Hanna speaks (that’s to say she writes) what’s in her mind. Not many of us confront problems head-on. In neurologists’ jargon, we’re in a default mode. We’re not critical enough in analysing what’s going on in our country. As a result, we are unable to identify and pick the best from relatively bad choices.

I hope Hanna will respond to this immature, sexist and racist comment from a highly agitated and emotional person showing symptoms of paranoia. I have good reasons for characterizing him as such.

For one thing, he’s anti-America. He goes to U.S. history of the last century and “cherry pick” to make his point – that the U.S. works all the time against Ethiopian interests. I very much doubt that this assertion is true. To give just one example, Eritrea would have not “federated” and later or “united” with Ethiopia without the U.S. support. That’s a historical support Ethiopian rulers flagrantly squandered. There was no treasure bigger than Eritrea.

Everybody knows how the U.S. governmets worked and are still working. Understandably, U.S. interests come first. I think it is how all governments worked and still work. It’s true that some do it aggressively and openly like the U.S. does while others do it less aggressively and subtly, but evey country does it. In fact, that’s what all governments should do, viz. work for the interests of the people that put them in office.

Working for ones interest does not, however, mean that the U.S. or any other country for that mattr deliberately works against the interests of another country for no reason. As far as I’m concerned, to go after another country for no reason is not how governments work. They might not support each other actively unless their interest is involved, but it is doubtful they will make an enemy of a country where their interest is not at risk.

Given this truthful premise, where is the logic of the writer that the U.S.is inimical to Ethiopia? To put the question differently, if the U.S. is inimical to Ethiopia as the writer suggests, what did Ethiopia do to be treated as an enemy by the U.S. from the last century till now? After all, inimicus in Latin translates to “enemy” in English. Can one country be enemy to another forever as the writer suggests? Unthinkable.

The last time I checked Ethiopian history, TPLF and EPLF fought with the DERG and defeated it. The U.S. or no U.S. they were to become governments in Ethiopia and eritrea. A lot has been said and written about the role of the U.S. during that period, but so many people are all divided as to what happened, what should have been done (or not done) by the U.S. Everyone is entitled to his-her opinion and move on.

Is it really necessary to raise the position the U.S. took during the Second World War (Italy vs. Ethiopia) to justify the argument that the U.S. is Ethiopia’s enemy today? I do not think so.

As a matter of fact, it was not only the U.S. that gave a nod to Italy during the invasion, almost all European countries including England and France did the same. Does it make sense to argue that all these countries were enemies of Ethiopia and still are to this day? Logically what was said about the U.S. applies to them too. I do not believe Ethiopia has so many enemies not even then.

We expect them to die for us, but the question is: “What about their interests and the people that elected them to stand for them and protect them?” Isn’t Ethiopia’s interest the writer is defending here? When interests clash, you sacrifice or stand for it? Definitely you stand for it.

Despite clash of interests, don’t forget that U.K liberated Ethiopia and the U.S.involvement in the war saved the world from Germany, Italy and Japan. Think of what kind of world we would have had if they won the war.

If you have credible information that American Embassy provides scholarships invariably for Tigres, name names and let everybody know them. If that really happened and you have proof, I think the U.S. congress might be interested to investigate. As a citizen of the U.S., you can petition for investigation and help the practice to stop. I doubt if you will even reply to this note.

No doubt that TPLF has serious problems and it will have to change or leave the place. Why “change” ratherthan “leave” because it makes gradual and peaceful transfer of power to others possible. Reportedlly, that’s what the U.S., E.U and many others are working on right now.

If their efforts come to fruition, think of the violence, ethnic-conflicts and risk of disintegration of the country that we can avoid. Don’t you think we should work on that line ratherthan foment endless conflict?

Hanna, please kick the rascal’s ass real hard!
