Every 5 May is a national public holiday called “Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day”. The holiday commemorates the brave resistance of Ethiopia’s people against the Italian invasion of the 1930’s and, more specifically, the victory in Addis Ababa in 1941 that led to Ethiopia’s independence.

As European nations looked to subdue and occupy Africa at the end of the 19th century, Ethiopia entered into an agreement to receive support from Italy in exchange for ceding land in modern-day Eritrea to the Italians.

The Italians then tried to expand their territorial claims leading to the First Italo-Ethiopian War in 1895. This conflict erupted in the Battle of Adwa on March 1st 1896 in which Italy’s colonial forces were defeated by the Ethiopians.

The defeat left a scar on Italy and arguably gave rise to Fascism and Benito Mussolini. In October 1935, Mussolini was to exact Italian revenge when he invaded and defeated Ethiopia in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and proclaimed Italian Ethiopia.

When the second world war began, the Ethiopian resistance, the Arbegnoch (literally, “patriots”), with the support of the British were able to restore sovereignty during the East African Campaign. Italian control ended when Emperor Haile Selassie entered Addis Ababa on May 5th (Miaza 27 in the Ethiopian calendar) 1941 and addressed the citizens, saying:

“Today is the day on which we defeated our enemy. Therefore, when we say let us rejoice with our hearts, let not our rejoicing be in any other way but in the spirit of Christ. Do not return evil for evil. Do not indulge in the atrocities which the enemy has been practicing in his usual way, even to the last.

Take care not to spoil the good name of Ethiopia by acts which are worthy of the enemy. We shall see that our enemies are disarmed and sent out the same way they came. As Saint George who killed the dragon is the Patron Saint of our army as well as of our allies, let us unite with our allies in everlasting friendship and amity in order to be able to stand against the godless and cruel dragon which has newly risen and which is oppressing mankind.”

  1. This May 5th 2020 is decided not to be celebrated by Ethiopians as show of protest to Sudan invading Ethiopia, because in the Month of April 2020 the Sudanese soldiers had invaded five to ten kilo meters deep inside the Ethiopian territory advancing towards GERD while the Ethiopian government did not even dare to speak to Sudan about it let alone defend the border . This shows currently Ethiopia is in noway shape or form entitled to claim the Victory Day because the Peacock PM is not taking any measures to protect the sovereignty of Ethiopia currently. The so called PM of Ethiopia Abiy was hoping he would hold an election in August to be followed with an election dispute so he can start a civil war which he can declare a state of emergency with and exert a military rule on Ethiopians , when election got postponed he came up with the peacock statue to create a civil war .

For OLF or anyone else to choose peace the instigator Abiy must be removed . Otherwise the people will not have peace even if they choose peace because the constant instigator is going around the country creating violence while at the same time the Sudanese Government soldiers head towards Ethiopian GERD with just in the last three weeks Sudan occupying between five to ten kilometers of Ethiopian territory all across the Sudan-Ethiopian border while the so called PM of Ethiopia Abiy is busy decorating his palace with peacock and running his mouth to OLF about peace rather than asking OLF for help to get the Ethiopian Sudan border respected. OLF got better leadership skills to fight Sudan than PP and Abiy knows it too. The PP Oromo Generals got no care if Ethiopia is invaded unless it affects Oromia directly.

Abiy is instigating people to fight against people so Prosperity Party goes around killing innocent civillians. He still got the peacock then he is planning to destroy Mesqel Square , in a country of all these instigations peace is being lost with the blind PM telling the people about situations on the ground . OLF chose peace when OLF left Eritrea with none of the promises Abiy made to OLF materializing . Abiy is not a man of his words not only to OLF but to every party so who is he to tell OLF what to do ? TPLF’s volunteer slave Abiy got no authority to tell the honorable OLF what to do.

Let him go tell his bed partners in slaveship or his mistresses what to do if he wants besides that he got no authority over OLF. Even Prosperity Party got no respect for him because he is making things worse for Prosperity members rather than making it any better , he is making prosperity members loose any last hope they had of leaving a legacy they can be admired for , while he makes things better for his masters the TPLF. TPLF right now got a blank check to do whatever they want , Abiy does not even dare to tell TPLF such a thing but he runs his mouth about OLF. The way he is going he is trying to create a major chaos before September so the formation of the transitional government by other parties becomes impossible to do so and Ethiopia fails in the hands of her enemies.

  2. Alem and Bisrat, both of you wrote with great passion about the many headed problems facing Ethiopia, our Motherland. But I did not read even a hint of solution. How do we bring about change without hurting the Motherland? Bisrat, in your comment I did not find even a hint of a solution that can be carried out. Suggesting the removal of PM Abiy Ahmed is not a tenable solution. Even then, how are you going to do that? With Jawar’s army? Keep safe, Alem and Bisrat from this Virus. Tecola

For many the late Meles seemed untouchable too , elites across the board bowing down for Abiy now as they bowed down for the late Meles, regardless the very few are still on the right track even if once again many chose to bow down for the traitor Abiy.

  4. Happy Belated Patriots Day Yo’ll!!! This day should be deemed the pride of humanity and of the colored in particular. It is also an occasion when we Ethiopians did not only prevail over aggression and evil but also showed our unmatched quality as people of magnanimity. It proved us as people who savored victory and also showed mercy to the defeated the same time. When I read about an account that tells how the late Emperor Haile and the victorious freedom fighter unanimously declared mercy to more than 200,000 Italian prisoners of war and even told them to stay in the country if that was their free choice. Many of them did just that. Tell that to those in Netherlands, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and many parts of Europe who were victimized by the Nazis during the war. Tens of thousands and probably in their hundreds of thousands of innocent Germans and sometimes Italians were hacked, stoned, burned alive and thrown off cliffs to their deaths by the enraged and rowdy mobs. But us? We did not do that. That is not in our culture and value until the deresas of Marx/Lenin/Mao commies came on the scene beginning the 1960’s. That is because the holy scripture in both religions we observe teach us revenge being just as a sin as the original atrocity committed. This beyond-repair Afro/Centric is proud of such part of our glorious history and will remain to be so until he takes his last breath on this good earth. There is nothing, absolutely nothing you can do about it. Happy Victory Day Yo’ll!!!!
