ODF Statement on EPRDF Proclamation on Oromia special rights on Addis Ababa (Finfinne)

The Council of Ministers of the Ethiopian federal government released a statement on the long overdue legal assertion regarding the rights of the Oromia state on the capital. After careful reading and examination of the contents of the statement, we fail to see any substantial legal remedy that addresses the concern and the demand of the Oromo people. Contrarily, some of the rights that the statement tries to list are universal rights and basic freedoms that every citizen of a given country should have enjoyed in the first place and do not need a new proclamation.

Moreover, we find the language and narratives in which this so-called Oromia’s special interest on Addis Ababa is framed disconcerting. The document is divisive, full of confusion, devoid of any substance and insinuates as if the Oromo people demanded some kind of preferential treatment at the expense of other Ethiopians residing in the city.

Without addressing the long-awaited demand and legitimate grievances of the Oromo people regarding the precarious and problematic status of Addis Ababa, the document appears rather intended to sow the seeds of discord, suspicion and intercommunal mistrust by exploiting the apprehension of various stakeholders on the future of Addis Ababa.

For over two years, across the width and length of Oromia massive protests were staged against the Addis Ababa Master Plan. Thousands were killed and tens of thousands herded into various detention centers for peacefully petitioning the government to respect and abide by the very laws it promulgated. Having brought the country under a state of emergency decree, the regime is relaunching the same Master Plan rejected by the Oromo populace under the guise of expansion of transportation and health services, rapid economic development, and proper compensation. The expansion of Addis Ababa and the land grabbing campaign over the last decades has not only resulted in the eviction and dispossession of Oromo farmers in Addis Ababa and the surrounding towns and countryside but also detrimental to the Oromo way of life and the environment. The much talked about economic growth that the government brags about rather benefited and enriched the coffers of its cronies.

We in the Oromo Democratic Front want to remind all Ethiopians that this government has lost all credibility. Any pronouncement and policy emanating from this regime must be viewed with cautious apprehension. What all Ethiopians are demanding is a fundamental change of the system rather than false promises of hollow fixes. And, failure to heed this genuinely popular desire for change risks plunging the country into further chaos and economic decay.

Time and again, EPRDF has been fooling itself and other through this ancient tactic of filing the political air with confusion and empty rhetoric. Instead of addressing problems, it is still trying, at this late hour, to divide and rule aimed at prolonging its grip on power. The fact is that these tactics have run their courses and lost potency. Change in Ethiopia is inevitable. The only way to put the country on the right track and address the political, social and economic worries of the People of Ethiopia is through meaningfully participative and fundamental reform and all-inclusive democratization starting from democratizing the ruling party itself. Once again, we call on the people of Ethiopia not to fail for yet another trap laid out by the TPLF/EPRDF. Say NO to the divide and rule tactics designed to weaken your resolve. Say Never to all attempts at putting one against another. The only way forward is to stand firm and fight in unison to end this brutal dictatorship.

  3. The statement from TPLF regarding special rights to the Oromo people of Addis Ababa and its environs is simply rubbish and as indicated with the response above divisive and utterly confusing. Then again, that is the objective of the proclamation.
Had it been a true change, a number of steps and controls would of been in place before beating the drum and telling the public with an information that is murkier than a mudded water. what is mind numbing is the so called intellectuals who simply drink the Cool Aid with no questions asked. TPLF cares only for their survival. A government that cares for the now and the future of the country and its people does not place mines to destroy what unites us. TPLF’s atrocities in the our beloved country is sky high. No Oromo will believe such a proclamation is an answer to their demands or resolution to the domination of a single ethnic group in their affairs. The TPLF is readying us for Rwandan type genocide. An individual who saw the Tutsi genocide will know what I am referring to. If not, I invite anyone to watch the movie “Hotel Rwanda”. TPLF/EPRDF is running out of time to resolve the legitimate demands of our people and digging deeper holes for themselves with such arrogant and jumbled up proclamation to buy time for their own survival.

  4. The good doc is 110% right on the money. What all Ethiopians need ASAP is the establishment of a true and genuine Democracy and the annihilation and total destruction of the devil worshiping tyrannical TPLF/EPRDF. Democracy is like the TIDE THAT LIFTS ALL BOATS. The establishment of Democracy will benefit all Ethiopians financially, socially, spiritually, health wise etc. So, let us not waste too much precious time by focusing on little things such as difference b/w different ethnic groups. Don’t sweat the little staff, rather laser focus where the money is, DEMOCRACY. The good doc is 110% right on the money. 5. Speaking as Amhara activist here, Woyane thought that Oromo people are fools, Dr Merera said – [Woyane holds on one hand stick, on the other hand Amolle], the oromo people have rejected the Amolle trick, go listen to Oromo intellectuals, like ODF, Dr Ezekiel, Jawar, OLF, facebook Oromos, all rejected the recent Amolle trick, except woyane cadres posing to be Oromos. I am really proud of Oromo people, I watched some afan oromo conversations, all outsmarted woyane tricks.

Woyane leaked the previous draft of legislation, in fact Woyane deliberately leaked it to see the public reaction, when all oromo oppositions rejected the proposal draft, woyane corrected the original draft, even now Oromos think that Master-plan is back through the back door, Oromos are saying that they don’t want a special treatment, their struggle is for equal rights but also it is not up to Woyane to give or to take, Addis or Finfinne is Oromo land full-stop!

    My personal opinion –
Oromos are the kingmakers of Ethiopia, the future of Ethiopia depends on Oromo people,
    1) geographical location, Oromo region is in the middle connected with almost all regions.
    2) Oromos are the majority.
    3) historical facts(not fiction) – Oromos are the makers of modern Ethiopia,[not just Yeju Oromos], even since Menelik Oromos dominated the military, etc. Hailesilasie and Mengistu being from Oromo ethnic background is not by chance.
*4) Woyanes think that their survival as ethnic based politics to continue as TPLF and EFFORT is depends on the continuation of Oromo nationalism, Gebru Asrat has made it clear.

So, I think Oromos have responsibility not just for the sake of the country but also for the sake of the small ethnic groups allover the country, at the moment the Debub people have been crushed together, what will happen if every ethnic group wants its own territory? it will be never ending civil war far worse than south Sudan or Somalia. Oromos need to grow up, enough of victimhood, no problem speaking their own language together with other languages, whether English or Amharic, Arabic or French. But the Oromos need to act responsibly, do not get carried away with facebook enka-selamta gossips.
