The US Embassy in Addis Ababa should be ashamed of this ridiculous and meaningless statement that serves no purpose at all other than appeasing the regime that is killing its people. It is amazing to see the length they went into crafting the wording of the statement and their attempt not to antagonize the regime that has deployed its army and kills unarmed people and mass incarcerating them. Look at the phrase ” We have noted reports that protestors and security officials have been injured or killed ….” . This is a shameful attempt to create equivalence between the death and injury of a government army and unarmed protestors who may have thrown stones at them. I did not even understand why the Embassy has to comment on whether the demonstrations were authorized or not. It looks like they want to make the tyrants happy.
The right thing to do would have been to condemn the killings and demand that the government stop killing unarmed and peacefully demonstrating citizens in Oromo and Amhara areas. I almost vomited when reading it. Disgusting!

Statement by the U.S. Embassy

Addis Ababa, August 8, 2016: The U.S. Embassy is deeply concerned with the extensive violence that occurred during protests across Ethiopia this weekend in the Oromia and Amhara regions. We have noted reports that protestors and security officials have been injured or killed, although confirmed numbers are not available.

The U.S. Embassy expresses its deep condolences to those who suffered as a result of the violence and regrets the damage to livelihoods, economic development, and the social fabric that such violence brings. We recognize that many of the demonstrations took place without authorization, and urge all parties to support those who are seeking constructive dialog and peaceful solutions. We reaffirm our call to respect the constitutionally enshrined rights of all citizens, including those with opposition views, to gather peacefully, and to express their opinions.

  1. They are hypocrites, as long as the TPLF junta serves them and protects their interest they will never condemn the barbaric acts committed by the regime. We should not forget that the US were supporters of dictators like Suharto of Indonesia and Agusto Pinoche of Chile. As long as their interest and strategy works in the region they don’t mind the death of innocent people. If it was in Eritrea we would have seen what kind of statement they would release. They would have come up with the idea of intervention like what they did in Libya.

  2. @ADMIN:
A life is precious whether it is a police officer, soldier or protester who died. The death of any single Person is a very sad news.

I dont see any problem with the report of the embassy because all lives matter.
U r the one “Admin” making the comparison and tryn to “equivalence” among the lives of People. All Lives Matter. The death of any single person is difficult to take.

  4. The reason is this: TPLF is a project of USA, UK and more to dismantle Ethiopia and make its resources open to multinational companies.

It is also a long stayed plan of the Western states (mainly the Europeans) to smash the pride and integrity of Ethiopia.

Don’t forget USA/UK and the others procured, installed and sustained TPLF. They know much more than we do that TPLF was/is terrorist, criminal and enemy of Ethiopia. If it were otherwise to these, they would have smashed it like Iraq and Libya in the 1990s.

So, US embassy is simply protecting its project, TPLF.
Ethiopians, though may seem infeasible should also engage the Western diplomats in Addis Abeba.

  5. the Americans know perfectly who is the dog and donkey. Look what they are able to say the Amhara and some Ormo about WEYANYE and we know they have never done as Ethiopian antagonists except sale thier land to the forgiveness

  6. It does not make a different if they condem or not, because as our forefathers did we have to face the sacrifice our own life to the beloved people of our country and to fight for freedom light

  7. THE MASTERS WILL SAY THINGS IN THESE ORDER
    1. THEY ARE CONCERNED BY THE SITUATION
    2. THEY WILL WANT BOTH SIDES TO CALM DOWN (PEOPLE VS SOLDERS)
    3. THEN THEY WILL ISSUE STATEMENT SAYING THE SOLDERS USED EXCESSIVE FORCE

    NOTHING DIFFERENT

  8. Counting American foreign policy to be on the side of democracy is like drinking salt water to quench a thirst. It never works. Take for example the conflict in the Balkans; they were there to resolve it with full force. Compare that with the conflict in Syria and Libya, they are watching as these countries burn to ashes. America serves the government that serves its interest. The talk about democracy is a cover to continue the use and the pillage of resources around the globe. The statement out of the American embassy in Addis Ababa attests they are turning a blind eye to the bloodshed. Here is a recent incident I noticed during the Turkish coupe attempt. Secretary of State John Kerry said “It does not seem it is a well-planned coupe”. Is this a signal to say, we wish it should have been planned to succeed? Without a doubt that is what he meant. Nevertheless, the Turks are in deep trouble with an extremist Islamist in power. Time will tell everyone how wrong they were to intervene and cause the coupe to fail. Life for the Turks will never be the same. Just wait and see!

  9. The Americans and the EU will not have the slightest concern about the death of the Amharas and the Oromos. I am sure they will come to the rescue of the TPLF with a rapid deployment force. The purpose of deploying the US Africa Command Force is to save their African dictators from the fall of power. The American politicians will never be friends of African citizens. They will prefer the extermination of Africans rather than losing their darling dictators.

  11. The stratagy if usa and britain seems to eliminate the black africans with the african bulshit creature like tigrean people libration front(tplf). If the oppressed people work together and fight against this sub human creatur like tplf(an east african isis) this stratagy will not be work.

  12. How d u expect the master of criminal Wayane regime to act. Remeber just like Eritrea, u are the owner of your country , and the downfall of Wayane is in the Heroic Ethiopian people. No matter how Wayane masters try to give life to a regime in intensive care, the heroic ethiopians will finish wayane within two weeks

  13. TPLF had been getting vital military intellegence from the undercover military agents working at ILCA / ILRI since time TPLF was fighting against Derg. Many of the so called livestock scientists used to go deep in the countryside among farmers pretending to examine the farmers but in actuality they were spying for TPLF about the farmers political attitude. The USA embassy and http://www.ilri.org/ethiopia had been supporting TPLF doing so much military intelligence work to support TPLF for decades pretending to be helping ethiopians while in actuality they were helping TPLF.

  14. I wonder why this guy expected the U.S. to encourage more protests by telliung them that they are doing the right thing. As we saw it for months and particularly in the past few weeks, encouraging protests means more injury, death and destruction of property. It is good that they did not do that.

The Middle East and North Africa are living proof of total devastation beyond fix resulting from the West’s support of peoples’ efforts to overthrow governments. Once armed conflicts reached a stage of no return, the West intervened militarily to assist armed resistance which eventually devastated and dissimated the very people it was supposed to protect. Is that what the guy wants for Ethiopia and Ethiopians? Better to reflect before barking up the wrong tree.

Why should the U.S. Embassy be ashamed for expressing concern over the violence the country is undergoing now? Is expressing concern over violence “ridiculous and meaningless”? The statement of the Embassy says it has “noted reports that protestors and security officials have been injured or killed”. Isn’t that what we all hear and know until now? I mean injury and death. Who knows exactly how many got injured or killed and from which side? Reports circulating are many and there are claims and counter-claims on the injured and dead. In the absence of non-partisan media on the ground – which I believe does not exist now – it is fair to suspect reports as partisan.

Accusing the Embassy of the effort “not to antagonize the regime that has deployed its army and kills unarmed people and mass incarcerating them” is meaningless. No doubt that the government is using its army to kill and incarcerate protesters, but can one be sure the people are unarmed? ESAT and other opposition diasora media are reporting that the people are armed and fighting with government soldiers and have killed many. So, why lie about raw fats?

In almost every Wester country, permission is required for demonstration. It might be called notifying the government or obtain clearance, but it is all about getting permission. We have seen in the West demonstators without permission asked to disperse and the use of force to disperse them if they refuse to comply. Throwing stones and other stuff results in the use of force sometimes Deadly ones. I fell law enforcement institutions act in a similar fashion everywhere.

One important aspect of the statement of the Embassy is the expression of condolences to those who suffered as a result of the violence. I believe this includes both family members of law enforcement officers and that of protesters. The Embassy has also expressed regrets on damage to livelihoods and economic development.

Personally, I am grateful that they rightly identified the most serous problem associated with the uprising right now. “The damage to social fabric that the violence brings.” I think this refers to inter-ethnic conflict that might degenerate to civil war at least in the northern part of the country namely between Tigre and Amara. Historcal contenders for power, their conflict might tranfigure the country beyond recognition – undoubtedly for the bad.

Finally the Embassy urged all parties to support those who are seeking constructive dialog and peaceful solutions. Luckily, this suggests there are people working on dialogue and peaceful solution. A recent report on Addis Standard suggested that AU will hold “peace building and national concensus” conference at the end of this month in which the government and its opposition both in and out of the country will sit to talk.

I like how the statement concluded: “We reaffirm our call to respect the constitutionally enshrined rights of all citizens, including those with opposition views, to gather peacefully, and to express their opinions.” That’s exactly what all of us should do.

  15. as much as they care for their interest, we should for ours now and for ever. Nothing more and nothing less.

  16. OH WHAT !Woyanes kill more than dozen of univrsity students of Debretabor University who were been returning to cumpas staying out of the mutiny. One of them happens to be My DOUGHTR LIDYA,who has been second year student of medicine. My dear Lidya may God place your soul in heaven, may this be the end of Woyane killing.
What is surprising is that no media has given coverage of this incidence.we are denied of recognition by the world.no one gave us the consolation to the masacre and creul treatment of our children.
    THE WORLD HAS FORGOTTEN US.
OH I AM CRYING TO THE WORLED

  17. What a shame!!! Are they telling us that when it comes to Ethiopians the fundamental human rights such as freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, peaceful demonstration has to be rights granted by the government? No they are universal human rights that do not require any government’s blessing.

  18. It n is totality shameful ,one ambassador serving a great country like sometimes silent is better than negative statements Ethiopian it is painful, ambassador must be apologize Ethiopian people,Beside we Ethiopian arent exespacting our freedom to came through usa.we know very much usa ,in this time can be work with dictators and nondictator as long as thay keep there interest, this time usa doesn’t care as long as who is ,thay need to keep there interest only and only.i believ our countery democracy can be serve for Ethiopians doesnt reject.lits stand for humanity and injustices.we Ethiopians soon or later witho or without usa our freedom will be reviale.inesh alllah.

  19. 20. All ethiopian they don’t respect anything from the western Country.we we have to do history like Tunisia and EGebut, the western country only thing is there interst.don’t make hope therid party

  21. The US and other western countries NEVER feel ashamed when they do what they always do – support dictatorships as long as they serve their greedy behaviour.

  22. I feel really sad to respond to this shame full us embassy statement. No wonder we have this type volatile world and we are able to see in our necked ayes this distructive situation throughout the world. No justs no peace and it looks like peace in this world is the enemy of the West particularly to the US and Great Britain. If peace wasn’t the enemy of those countries, they wouldn’t support a racist and Facist bandit mafia group. Thayer were arming and feeding them for the last twenty five years. The people of Ethiopia have to go through marginalization exploitation by minority ethnic group. Who knows, may be they may want us to finish each other like what we witnessed in Rwanda, that way, their company can exploit what ever resources the country has.

May God will stand with people of Ethiopia

  23. look what are able to say the weak and ignorant Ethiopians, they have no ayes to see and mind to think.
the Majority Galla and the weak Amharah should be in power in Ethiopia. these people are always trouble makers .

    1. the president of Ethiopia is Ormo (GALA)
    2. the Prime minster is from Welayta
    3. several minsters and governess are Amahara and Oromo
    4. the Tigrians are only workers , they are not in power
    5. the Tigrians they gave above 20 years plan for Ethiopia , but i am sure they will fail like old dry tree
so what is the problem, it is only complex of inferiority. the Amara has been in power more than 100 years , what is Ethiopia gain except they where insisting that Amharic should be the national language of Ethiopia whether you like it or no.
in one hundred years they failed to do anything . in 1950 Ethiopia and south Korea had the same economy development and we can compare ourself Ethiopia and south Korea now ,we cant even thing if it was like this .
They failed to connect Ethiopia by road , they tried to connect it by plain which they failed completely.
what about the Oromo , nothing they field to administrate the huge and fertile land of Ethiopia , and they are loosing their time on protesting to write in Latin’
Thanks God Ethiopians are Equal to others by any thing .
    1. we are the first people in the world who coined the cross in our money
    2. we are the first people who create to protect the displaced people ( Ethiopia protected and accepted the first Refugee Muslims
    3. Ethiopia the first country in the world who accepts Christianity and Islam without war and killing .
    4. we are the only people not colonized and have their own Alphabets
we are people of a lot of quality and dignity .
the enemy from the red sea have damaged a lot of real Ethiopians, but they failed to change them.
The Oromo, the Beja ( the people of Bejamder integrated with the tigrians have gain momentum power when the real Ethiopians have suffered a lot .
this is our history and we shall serviles for ever and ever .

  24. Shame on you, you American Embassy in Addis! We know that you are always after your own security and economic interests. How many brutal dictators have been kept politically alive for years in Africa and elsewhere in the world just because of their loyalty to your interests. That is why even president Obama said in Addis that the EPRDF-government was democraticaly elected. What a shame! But woyane`s ship is now sinking; there is no way to stop it. Please tell your government in Washington that it is now high time to stop its help to the killer woyane-regime. Please think of journalists and political leaders and thousands of young Ethiopians who are suffering in woyane`s torture-prisons and secret undrground torture-camps
for the last 25 years. Enough is enough. “BEQA”!

  25. What an idiot. What makes the life of a protestor superior than a Soldier? You are delusional and have no clue what a peaceful protest is. The use of stones and/or any projectiles, not to mention the destruction and igniting buildings and vehicles on fire, violates the norms of a peaceful protest. My dear, where on earth have you seen police soldiers die from protestor inflicted injury and yet the protest is regarded as peaceful?
